Aboriginal Legal Access Program

About this Program

The Aboriginal Legal Access Program (ALAP) has been a part of Hawkesbury Nepean Community Legal Centre (HNCLC) since August 1999. The ALAP was initiated as a strategy to increase access to legal services for the Aboriginal communities within the HNCLC catchment area. The primary strategy was to employ an Aboriginal worker who works alongside HNCLC employees and other Aboriginal workers in the area.

The ALAP objectives that govern the work and activities planned are:

  • Enabling better access to legal services for Aboriginal people
  • Increasing the number of Aboriginal people receiving legal services
  • Improving and enhancing the capacity of community legal centres (CLCs) to provide effective and culturally appropriate services to Aboriginal people
  • Increasing awareness among Aboriginal people of their legal rights and the legal services available to them


What can this Program do?

  • This program has an Aboriginal worker who can assist Aboriginal clients with legal information and referrals.
  • The Aboriginal Legal Access Program coordinates outreach services for Aboriginal clients.
  • We organise and provide legal education sessions for members of the Aboriginal community and community workers.
  • We offer advice by appointment at the Centre and at a range of locations throughout the Hawkesbury.

We also have drop in sessions at South Windsor and Kurrajong where Aboriginal clients are welcome to attend.

South Windsor: Drop in sessions happen every Monday morning between 9:30am and 11:30 during the school term at Windsor South Public School. The entrance is at the Cox Street gate, and you will need to go into the first building on the right.

Kurrajong: Drop in sessions happen every first and third Thursday of the month, between 10:00am and 12noon, during the school term at Kurrajong Community Centre. The address is 30 McMahons Park Road, Kurrajong.
